In this crazy day in age many people should be getting more sleep but simply aren’t.  Most of us simply are not getting adequate sleep. Unfortunately, this is the cause of many health conditions and challenges such as obesity, heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Some research has even shown that it can be linked to certain types of cancers.

Among the top issues here is that getting more sleep is something we seem to want but that we don’t prioritize. It has become such an accepted part of our lives that we’re not getting enough rest that we accept it and move on.  Instead of doing something about it, we suffer through it.

Some of the reasons we aren’t getting more sleep when we need it is that we’re not giving rest a high enough value.  Many of us say that we can’t get more.  We don’t have time. Even if we go to bed early, we don’t fall asleep or we wake up earlier.  In essence, we’re giving up on ourselves far too easily.

Getting more sleep isn’t something that just happens.  This is particularly true when we’ve been living on too little rest for a long time.  The body needs to adapt to a new bedtime and waking schedule.  It needs to be retrained to get the rest it actually requires.

Take a look at your sleeping environment. Does it welcome rest and relaxation, or is it busy? Do you have your laptop, phone, and other devices in there? Your room should be sleep conducive, so its best to have your room be only for sleep, meaning you basically have a bed and your clothes in there, and that is it. Keep your devices either in another room, or off and out of site.

If you have trouble sleeping, limit alcohol. You should not have more than one beverage a night and not right before bed. Some people even found it helpful to have only one beverage per week.
