When talking about hormone treatments, it is important to discuss age. As a woman ages, her body produces fewer hormones as the need for menstruation and in turn childbirth ceases. As a woman enters the stage of menopause, it is then when she starts to worry about many things. Questions like “Is this my life?” and “Should I make changes to my diet?” come to mind. When menopause begins, it brings with it many emotions and changes in behavior. Among many changes, there is one particularly negative one and that is excessive weight gain.
Now, that would worry any woman, considering most of them aren’t even aware they are in the early stages of menopause. Though inevitable, there are hormone therapies available to counter this symptom. Hormone therapies aren’t as scary as they sound and to make them less scary, we must first explain what they are. Hormone therapy consists of more than one of the female hormones, such as estrogen, progestin, and also sometimes testosterone. These hormones are already present in the female body but as it ages, the quantity they are produced in reduces until there isn’t much left to work with.
This leads to weight gain. Hormone therapy balances the level of these hormones in the body, which prevents weight gain. Now, we must keep in mind that the weight that one gains due to the lack of hormones, it isn’t easy to get rid of with the help of a strict diet and exercise. It must be countered with hormone therapy or else the problem will only fester like an untreated wound over time.
The most common fear related to hormone therapies is that they might cause the woman to gain weight when, in fact, the opposite has been proven with the help of numerous studies which show that the women on hormone treatments gained much less weight during menopause than the ones that were not on HT.
But don’t fool yourselves into thinking that just the hormone treatment alone will help you lose weight. What it does is help prevent gaining excess weight. While on hormone treatments, one must continue to exercise as normal and avoid incorporating extra calories in the diet. A healthy amount of exercise will not only help reduce the chances of weight gain but it will also help keep you in a better mood. And as a woman entering the stage of menopause, you know how important it is to keep the mood swings at bay or they might disrupt your everyday life and spread negativity.
